Students Participate in ECMEA Instrumental Festival |
| January 28, 2008 |
Our instrumental students with more than one year of study on their instrument participated in the ECMEA Instrumental Festival, earning grades ranging from 89 to 100%. A generous grant by the grandparents of students at WSCS allowed us to once again become members of the Erie County Music Educators Association. As members we can participate in the Instrumental Festival as well as the Choral events. We also have access to the library of sheet music for bands and choir.
The Festival was held the first three Saturdays in January at area high schools. Elementary Students participated on the 4th at Depew, Junior High students were adjudicated at Orchard Park on the 12th and High school students at Alden on the 18th.
Each student chose a piece from the ECMEA's approved list working with their teacher; they spent many hours practicing, and then performed in front of a single adjudicator. They played the piece they selected, played scales selected by the adjudicator, and also showed their skills at sight reading; playing a piece provided by the adjudicator after just one minute of preparation.
Mrs. Reen pointed out benefits of participation: "It gives the students an independent evaluation of their skill level; at the higher levels it gives them an opportunity to compete for a place in the Erie County Orchestra or Erie County Band. It also provides a benchmark for the school, giving us an indication of how our skill levels measure up."

An Opportunity to Help Our Music Department! |
| November 29, 2007 |
Many families were blessed as they attended our school concerts last year. Our students have also used their musical talents for the Lord in such venues as nursing homes, the Buffalo City Mission, and the McKinley Mall. A good number of students have excelled as they participated in the NYACS Fine Arts Festival last spring. This year, many of our young people will also be competing in the Erie County Fine Arts Festival.
To help provide our young people new music and equipment, we take up an offering for the Music Department once a year during the Christmas concerts. Any contributions are totally voluntary, and all should feel free to attend whether they are able to give or not.
We hope that you will be able to attend many of our concerts this year and that they will be a great blessing to you! |

| Reading in the Home |
| November 12, 2007 |
Reading is the most inportant skill that a student acquires during the first years of school. Books should be an evident part of the home. Children should see their parents reading for enjoyment, and parents should read to them even when they are very young.
As children learn to read, it is wise for parents and children to read together. Christian parents find it wise to read together. Each person in the family can take turns reading verses from short passages of Scripture, and then the verses can be discussed to increase understanding.
Encouraging your children to read sets the stage for successful learning throughout life. As your children read the Bible, they learn about their need for the Lord. Let's encourage our children to read!
| Congratulations, Falcons! |
